Participating in a Discussion Board
The following grading rubric and description for discussion boards will be used for all whole-class discussion board learner evaluations. Frequent and substantive posts to discussion boards are crucial in an online course as a method to foster the deep involvement of every learner. Discussion boards are an opportunity for learners to reflect on content and engage with their peers through the sharing of knowledge, experience, and current literature.
Key Points
 Learners will not be able to delete or revise posts once they have been saved.
 Suggest learners take several minutes reviewing their post prior to saving.
 It is recommended learners use create a post in Word, use Grammarly to review, and save to your computer to prevent loss of work due to an interruption during uploading.
 Please do not upload the Word document itself.
 Learners will not be able to view or respond to any other posts until their initial post is made and saved to the discussion board.
Requirements for Participation in a Discussion Board
 The learner will make an initial substantive post in response to forum questions by the end of Day 3.
 The learner will make two substantive peer response posts by the end of Day 6.
 A substantive post is defined as a minimum of 150 to 200 words.
 The initial post and peer responses must be original work.
 Learner will refrain from excessive quoting of reference sources.
 Peer response posts must be on two different days from the original initial post made.
This process ensures the learner is given adequate time to prepare and post initial responses as well as the necessary time to review peer postings and provide meaningful reactions which extend the conversation.
 Learners must provide two or more references with in-text citations to the current literature and/or assigned readings supporting assertions made in the original initial post.
 Learners must provide one or more references with in-text citations to the current literature and/or assigned readings supporting assertions made in BOTH peer response posts.
 References should be formatted to the most current edition of APA. Use the toolbar to assist with formatting such as italics (however, hanging indent is not available in web editing).
 Please note Canvas will sometimes reformat when the post is saved. There will be no deduction for this if all correct components of the reference per APA are met.
 References must be peer-reviewed literature, professional textbooks, and/or professional websites.
 Publication dates should be within the last five-years and relevant to the discussion topic.
 Non-academic resources are not acceptable such as Wikipedia, Medscape, WebMD, blogs without professionally-credentialed authors, and websites that do not relate to the discussion topic.
Evaluation of Learner Submissions
 Asynchronous discussion boards are evaluated for quality of postings and learner participation.
 The rubric for participating in a discussion board provides the criteria for learner evaluation.
 It is recommended the learner have a clear understanding of the criteria required in the rubric for the most optimal evaluation outcome.
